Purchase the appropriate vignette (10-day, 2-month, or annual)

Plan your route using ASFINAG's official route planner

Check for seasonal alpine pass closures relevant to your route

Verify your vehicle documents: registration, insurance, driving licence

Pack mandatory equipment: first-aid kit, warning triangle, hi-vis vest

Monitor weather forecasts and road condition reports before departure

Follow Austrian traffic laws throughout your journey

Preparation Checklist

Purchase the correct Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) before entering motorways
Carry a first-aid kit, warning triangle, and high-visibility vest — mandatory in Austria
Check alpine pass opening dates if travelling between October and May
Ensure your vehicle insurance (Green Card) is valid for Austria
Download offline maps as mobile coverage can be limited in alpine areas
Familiarise yourself with Austrian speed limits: 50 km/h urban, 100 km/h rural, 130 km/h motorway
Note that using a mobile phone while driving (without hands-free) carries a €50 fine
Carry sufficient EUR cash as some rural toll booths and car parks are cash-only
Check the ASFINAG website for current roadworks and closures before departure
Understand the 0.5 g/L blood alcohol limit (0.1 g/L for new drivers and professional drivers)
Be aware that winter tyres are situationally mandatory from November to April
Register your vehicle details if renting, as rental companies may charge vignette fees separately
